Lacrosse is one of the most versatile sports that a person can play. It is mostly played in the spring and fall which are the rainiest seasons which had me wondering, can you really play a successful lacrosse game in the rain?
As a general rule, you can play lacrosse in the rain as long as there aren’t any signs of a possible thunderstorm. If there is even a slight chance of thunderstorms, then it’s best to err on the side of caution and not play. Make sure to wear proper safety equipment to prevent slips and falls.
Lacrosse is a sport that can be played in almost any weather condition as long as you are properly prepared for it! Read on as I dive deeper into this topic and tell you the must-know do’s and don’ts of playing lacrosse in the rain.
Does Lacrosse Get Canceled For Rain?
As a general rule, lacrosse does not usually get canceled when there is rain. However, if there is a chance of thunderstorms, the game will be canceled for safety reasons. Wearing the right pair of lacrosse cleats during the rain will help prevent unnecessary slips and falls while it’s raining.
It is also important to note that rain doesn’t nullify any elements of the game. So, play will continue as normal even if it is raining. However, if the rain affects the field conditions and significantly increases the chances of, say, slipping and injury, then the game may be stopped.
Some of the things you should not do while playing lacrosse in the rain include:
- Don’t forget to put on every single piece of lacrosse gear before you step out on the field. This includes your helmet, mouthguard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, and cleats
- Just because it is raining doesn’t mean that you can forgo wearing any gear. In fact, you should take extra care to make sure that all of your gear is secure and properly fitting
- Don’t play in swampy conditions. If the field is flooded or has standing water, then it is best to not play. This is because playing in these conditions increases the risk of slipping and getting injured
- Don’t ignore the presence of lightning. If there is lightning in the area, then you should immediately stop playing and seek shelter
As I found out from experience, having the right type of footwear to play lacrosse can mean the difference between winning or losing a game. That’s why I recommend getting The New Balance Men’s Burn X2 Mid-Cut Lacrosse Shoes to enhance your performance. You can check out these lacrosse cleats on Amazon!
They also have a great Women’s Cleats collection that you can check out there.
Some of the things you can do to make playing lacrosse in the rain easier include:
- Wearing proper footwear is key. Make sure that you are wearing cleats that have good traction
- Protective gear is mandatory, but you can also invest in rain gear such as a poncho or rain pants
- Use a waterproof ball if possible. If not, make sure to wipe down the ball as much as possible to prevent it from getting too slippery
- Keep your stick clean and dry by wiping it down with a towel between possessions
All of these tips will allow you to have an edge over the competition during a lacrosse game in the rain. As we all know, it can take just one extra goal to win the game.

What Do You Wear To Lacrosse In The Rain?
In general, you should wear more protective gear in the rain, such as a lacrosse helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, cleats, and arm pads to prevent injuries. Since rain makes the field extra slippery during the game, wearing proper lacrosse gear can prevent you from having serious injuries and falls.
Using proper lacrosse cleats is the best method that I used to prevent myself from slipping and hurting myself. Proper cleats are designed to provide good traction in wet conditions and prevent you from having serious falls.
As I stated in a recent article of mine, lacrosse cleats provide better ankle support than any other pair of cleats out there. This is because they are designed to have great maneuverability on the field especially when it rains.
*Side Note: I recently wrote an article called Can You Play Lacrosse Without Cleats. This article compares lacrosse cleats to other pairs of cleats and establishes which cleats are the best. You can check out this article here!
Does Rain Ruin Lacrosse Mesh?
Generally speaking, rain should not ruin your lacrosse mesh as long as you dry it after the game. The mesh is designed to be waterproof, so it can withstand getting wet. However, it is important to make sure that you dry off your stick as much as possible between possessions and after the game.
A lacrosse mesh is generally designed to be waterproof, but I would more likely consider them to be “water resistant”. This is because when you play lacrosse for long periods of time in wet conditions, water eventually sips into the mesh and gets it wet.
When a mesh is constantly wet, it will lose its shape and will need to be replaced!
When I need to restring my lacrosse head (which is pretty often), my favorite mesh to use is the ECD Lacrosse Hero 3.0. I recently came across this Complete Kit of Lacrosse Mesh and HeroStrings on Amazon and I never needed anything else. You can check it out on Amazon!
The best thing to do after every single lacrosse game, no matter if it rains or not, is to dry your lacrosse mesh using the methods I’m going to talk about below.
How Do You Dry Lacrosse Mesh?
The best way to dry a lacrosse mesh is by crinkling up some newspaper and placing it in the pocket of the mesh. This will help absorb any moisture that is present. Do this several times to make sure to absorb all excess moisture that might be trapped in the mesh and leave your stick in a dry place.
You can also dry your lacrosse mesh by using a blow dryer on low heat and low speed. I usually use this method only if I’m planning to use my lacrosse stick again the next day since it drys the mesh faster,
The air from the blow dryer will get into the fibers of the mesh and dry it faster.
I sometimes combine these 2 methods to make sure that my lacrosse stick mesh is ready for use within a few hours time.

How Do Lacrosse Players Stay Warm?
Generally speaking, the gear that lacrosse players wear does a good job of keeping them warm. However, if it is particularly cold out, then players may also wear Under Armour sportswear or other types of long clothing underneath the gear to maximize the retention of heat.
Can You Play Lacrosse In The Snow?
While snowy conditions make it a little harder to maneuver, you can still play lacrosse in the snow. Safety equipment, such as lacrosse cleats, can make it easier to maneuver in both wet fields and snowy fields. Just make sure to take extra care to avoid slipping and getting injured.
